An Interview with Betty

Learn about the owner and primary interior designer at Decorating Den Interiors in this Interview with Betty.

Tell us about yourself

I was born in the Caribbean, on the island of Grenada. I moved to New York at the age of 9 and was raised in Long Island. I have lived in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1987.

I’ve always loved the arts in its various forms. As a young girl I studied dance for many years; ballet, modern, and tap. I played the violin throughout elementary, junior, and high school. Living in places like New York and San Francisco exposed me to the theater, museums, historical sites, etc.

I also had the opportunity to travel to many European countries which has opened my eyes and mind even further.

Read an interview with Betty Bolah-Roul, your local interior designer. How did you get started in interior design?

I had always admired buildings that had good interior design. I worked as a Pharmaceutical Sales Representative for over 20 years and started giving my design advice to my physicians, whether it was for their home or for the office. In the meantime I took various design classes through the local college. My friends also came to me asking for my expertise for their homes.

What led you to purchase a Decorating Den Interiors franchise?

I saw a Decorating Den Interiors ad in a local magazine and it talked about becoming a franchise owner. I had a discussion with the owner and was intrigued as I had never heard of Decorating Den before that ad. Then soon after, I was driving to attend a motivational workshop in the East Bay and saw a Decorating Den Interiors van. I took it as a sign that it was meant to be. I had wanted to retire from Pharmaceutical at a certain point in my career and have my own business, and Decorating Den seemed to be the perfect fit.

What type of projects do you prefer?

I really enjoy residential design, from window coverings, floor coverings, furniture, accessories, and lighting. I am open to doing some kitchen and baths, but not major renovations.

What are your personal favorite design styles and why?

Contemporary design – I love a space that is comfortable and inviting, yet with some sophistication. I love using muted colors with various textures for the majority of the space while bringing in bold colors in the accessories, and artwork to create a dynamic environment. The colors create harmonious, sophisticated visuals throughout the space.

Transitional style – because it celebrates natural light and a relaxed feel with smooth, blending details that create warm yet modern interiors. This style is great for those who want something between traditional and modern.

Eclectic – Though difficult to achieve this style can be so much fun for those who love to express themselves, and have varying styles. They are not afraid to show who they are.

What can a client expect from you?

That I am going to listen to their needs, communicate frequently, stay within their investment, and give them more than they expected.

What do you like about the design process?

My favorite part of the process is putting the design together and sourcing the items I know would please my client.

What do clients like about working with you?

I listen to their needs, I communicate to them regarding timeline, and I stay within their investment range. Read my reviews.

Describe your perfect client

My perfect client is one who has the budget to get what it is they want accomplished. They are going to leave the design process to me, and not shop around while I’m trying to source items for them. We will work together to make their dream a reality.

Tell us about your family?

I am from a large family, I have 4 brothers and 3 sisters. I myself have 3 children; my eldest is in nursing school, the middle child is in law school, and the youngest is in junior college. We love to spend time together whether it’s enjoying a good meal, traveling, or just vegging in front of the television binge watching a series!

What do you do in your spare time?

I go to the gym; yoga, pilates, zumba.  I’m currently taking Latin dance classes with my mate. I love to read, travel, cook, spend time with friends, dine, wine tasting, visit museums, attend concerts, and the theater.
